CIVIL DEFENCE DUTY
CO-OPERATION OF HOME GUARD. WHEN NOT NEEDED BY.MILITARY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An announcement that members of the Home Guard are to be available for co-operation in civil defence duty when not required for military duty was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, and the Minister of Civil Defence, Mr Wilson, in a joint statement issued yesterday.. They said the guiding principle of this arrangement was the need to make the most possible use of manpower and womanpower for national welfare. “An increasing use of women for duties in civil defence is under consideration, and the ability of the existing E.P.S. organisation to meet calls will be strengthened by a scheme of general training for various duties instead of specialised training, in accordance with the practice which has been found necessary in Great Britain,” the Minister said. ‘Tn the ordinary course some units would not function till after a raid. It is deemed necessary that, during a .raid, members of such units should be working instead of waiting.”
