Mr M. J. Reardon has been re-ap-pointed a conciliation commissioner. Sister Wallace Pinkerton, who has been nursing in Taranaki for some weeks, has returned to her home in Masterton. The- settlers of Makomako tendered a farewell social gathering to Mr and Mrs C. McMurtrie, well known settlers, and made then presentations. Mrs McMurtrie and family will make their new home at Aokautere, and at a later date Mr McMurtrie will proceed to camp. Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mr Jordan is a member of the special committee set up by Cabinet to consider a report on New Zealand’s Emergency Fire Service, prepared by Mr A. D. Wilson, of England.- The committee has been sitting in Wellington this week. The death is announced from Hollywood of Edna May Oliver, the wellknown stage and screen actress, after several weeks’ illness. She was born in 1883, left school at the age of 14, and went to work. She was married in 1928 and divorced in 1933. After a career in light opera and on the stage she entered the movies in 1930, and became extremely popular. The death has occurred of Mr Henry James Willis, of Wellington, aged 73, who was born in Christchurch, but spent most of his lifetime in Wellington, where he was formerly in business as a tailor, and for many years was a representative on the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, acting as an assessor in industrial negotiations. From 1914 to 1918 he was m charge of the checking and examination of military uniforms at Trentham, and during the 1918 influenza epidemic was in charge of the temporary hospital at Brooklyn. For 45 years he had been a member of the Ancient Order of Druids, and was a past district president.
