RED CROSS SOCIETY

COUNTRY DISTRICTS. MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE. ' The monthly meeting of the Country Districts Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held in Masterton, Mrs A. C. Gawith presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed to those members who had lost relatives in the present war. Mrs Gawith, in presenting her report, stated that the Sub-Centre was grateful to the Country Women’s Club for the use of its rooms. The occupying of new quarters and the preparation for the shop day on November 27 had resulted in a busy time being experienced by members. Parcels had been posted for next-of-kin of prisoners of war, and a parcel of goods sent to assist the next-of-kin of a New Zealand prisoner residing in England. The speaker stated that' country people wishing advice in connection with the packing, etc., of their prisoner-of-war parcels, could obtain the same at 30 Church Street on a Wednesday, or by ringing 1951 on that day. Next-of-kin could purchase pullovers, socks, balaclavas, scarves and mittens which they had on hand for the cost of the wool, or, if preferred, the wool could be purchased for IOJd a skein. It was arranged that the following members should take charge of stalls for the shop day on November 27:— Cakes, Mrs R. McPherson; produce, Mrs J. F. D. Hewitt; clothing, old and new, Mrs J. W. de Castro; fancy stall, Mrs Kemble Welch; flowers, Mrs F. J. Pike. Mesdames K. Groves and J. A. McLean are to be the lunch convenors. Mrs Gawith stated that goods for the shop day could be left on November 25 or 26 at No. 2 Sample Room, where the papier mache workers would be busy. The committee desire to thank the Upper Plain Women’s Institute and Mesdames H. J. Francis and Carswell for clothing parcels and knitted goods, and Mr Mabson for sand.
