TOKIO RAID HERO
NOT RECOGNISED BY U.S.A
DRUGGIST. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29. The famous aviator Brigadier-Gen-eral Jimmy Doolittle, who led United States bombers over Tokio, was refused a tube of toothpaste because he had no empty tube to give in exchange and was bluntly asked if he knew there was a war going on, a Memphis druggist disclosed the other day. The druggist, Malin M. Ellis, said he did not at first recognise his distinguished customer when Doolittle visited Memphis. After being refused the toothpaste he then asked for an item that has been difficult to obtain because of war interference with imports. He was told it was not in stock. The next item requested was a •bottle of hair /tonic and Doolittle protested mildly ''over the seemingly excessive tax on Hhe bottle. Ellis fixed a stern eye upon him and asked: “You’ve heard about the war, haven’t yjou?” “I just didn't know,” was the reply. “You sed, I’ve been away. Doolittle is my nalme.” After that hte got the toothpaste.
