“THIS THUNDERBOLT”
NEW ZEALAND DIVISION AND BRITISH ARMOURED DIVISIONS CORPS THAT FINISHED RGMEL’S ARMY. BRITISH PRIME MINISTER'S TRIBUTE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 11. A striking tribute to the work of the New Zealand Division in the Battle of Egypt was paid by Mr Churchill, in the House of Commons. He said that, for the purpose of turning to full account the breach made in Rommel’s lines, an entire new corps was formed, consisting of two British armoured divisions and the New Zealand Division, “that ball of fire,” as it is described by those who have seen it at work. “This powerful force of between 40.000 and 50,000 men, including the best tanks, the Grants and Shermans, was withdrawn from the battlefront immediately after Rommel’s repulse in the second Battle of El Alamein and devoted itself entirely to intensive training,” said Mr Churchill. “It was this thunderbolt, hurled through the gap, that finished Ptommel and his arrogant army.”
