STATE FUNERAL

LATE HON. H. T. ARMSTRONG ARRANGEMENTS IN WELLINGTON & CHRISTCHURCH. NATIONAL PARTY TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph—-Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Arrangements for the funeral of the late Hon. H. T. Armstrong were announced last night by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry. Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street, at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow. The casket will be carried into the church by prominent figures in the Labour movement. The celebrant will be the Rt. Rev. Monsignor T. F. Connolly. At the conclusion of the Requiem Mass the casket will remain in St. Mary of the Angels and members of the public who wish to show their respect will, till 2 p.m., have an opportunity to do so. The funeral procession, which will be on foot, will leave St. Mary’s at 2.30 p.m. The casket will be borne out of the church by six of the late Mr Armstrong’s Ministerial colleagues. A Solemn Requiem Mass will be held in Christchurch at the Catholc Cathedral, Barbadoes Street, at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The celebrant will be the Roman Catholc Bshop of Chrstchurch, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Brodie. The interment will take place at Bromley Cemetery, and the funeral procession will start at 2.30 p.m. It is anticipated that all members of the Government will attend the funeral in Christchurch. The Mass in Wellington and Christchurch will be broadcast.

The following telegram has been received by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, from The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland: “On behalf of the Parliamantary Opposition and the National Party organisation I desire to extend the sympathy of our members in the passing of the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. By his devotion to the cause he served and by his honesty of purpose in that service Mr Armstrong won the esteem and goodwill of political friend and foe alike, and on personal grounds he had a circle of friends far wider than his immediate political supporters. He leaves behind him a lifetime of service and a record of accomplishment that should be an inspiration to those who come after. The National Party is honoured to pay tribute to one whose memory will be so universally respected.”
