THEFT CHARGE
MONEY TAKEN FROM RESTAURANT. SOLDIER COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. Charged with the theft of £9O 19s 5d from a restaurant keeper, Mattie Nolan, of Queen Street, Masterton, a soldier, Robert Hyndman Brown, of Auckland, appeared on remand before Messrs A. D. Low and H. E. Pither, J’s.P., in the Masterton Magistrates Court this morning. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellintgon, for sentence. Mr R. McKenzie appeared for the accused and Detective Sergeant W. Kane prosecuted. Evidence was given by Mattie Nolan, who stated that he had left a locked cash box containing £9O 19s 5d in a room at the rear of his shop, at 2.30 o’clock last Sunday morning. Witness said he had no safe, and on account of earthquake damage entry into the shop would have been easy. The money involved was recovered.
