GATHERING IN MASTERTON WAIRARAPA SUB-CENTRE DELEGATES. INTERESTING DEMONSTRATIONS. A gathering of Reel Cross Voluntary Aid and transport delegates from all sub-centres of the Wairarapa was held in Masterton on Saturday. _ „ . . At a meeting held in the Y.M.C.A. m the morning over which Mr Norman Lee presided, the following officers of Voluntary Aid detchmcnts were elected:—Mrs A. F. Stewart, Masterton Advisory Centre Director; Mrs L. T. Herbert, Pahiatua. centre commandant; Mrs F. C. Bunny, Greytown, assistant centre commandant. After lunch, at which 72 delegates were the guests of the centre, a Voluntary Aid and transport demonstration was held in the Lansdowne schoolgrounds. The Masterton Transport Detachment opened the programme with a drill display, followed by an exhibition of first aid treatment for a burn on the face, and stretcher drill by the Pahiatua Voluntary Aids and transport members. Carterton transport girls donned overalls and gas masks and rescued a “victim" in a gas attack, while others gave first aid treatment engaged in stretcher drill and capably loaded an ambulance. Greytown and country districts Voluntary Aids concentrated on demonstrations of roller bandaging, Martinborough Aids on the treatment for a compound fracture, Featherston on artificial respiration after drowning, while the Carterton Aids completed the programme by showing the method of moving a patient with a fracture of the upper spine. Teams then competed for a trophy donated by the Wairarapa branch of the Registered Nurses’ Association, the Featherston Voluntary Aids being the winners. Miss H. Grant, matron of the Masterton Hospital, in presenting the cup, stated that this was to be an annual competition, and she hoped that through the keenness and efficiency of their Aids every sub-centre might in time be the holder. Mr Norman Lee then presented certificates to transport members. He thanked all those who had contributed to the success of the gathering; the Lansdowne School Committee and headmaster for the use of the. grounds; Lieut.-Col. Fea and members of the Bth Field Ambulance for their interest in the transport services: the Wairarapa branch of the Registered Nurses’ Association for the donation of the trophy, and all members who had .taken part in the demonstration, assisted with the transport or served tea. Presentations were made to Misses D. Redman (Pahiatua) and M. Keltic (Greytown) Voluntary Aids who had enlisted for service overseas. The visiting delegates greatly appreciated being shown over the Masterton Hospital by the matron and sisters.
