A GOOD BEGINNING

a. little over half of the amount of the Second Liberty Loan already in hand and just over a fortnight to go before the lists are closed, a very good beginning has been made in this national financial effort, but there is room still for an even better ending. “It is the duty of all who have money to invest, whether the sum be large or small,” as the Prime Minister has said, “to subscribe to the utmost of their resources.” If a driving incentive were needed, it. might, be found in even a moment’s contemplation of the service and sacrifices of the manhood of the Dominion, and of some of the finest representatives of its womanhood, in the fighting areas. Day by day, not only in the grim and deadly battle now being fought in Egypt, but in the mighty air offensive the British Commonwealth and its Allies are unleashing against the Axis Powers, at sea, and in other fields of conflict New Zealanders are giving their lives for their country and for the national and international cause to which it is committed. It is by comparison a small thing, but at the same time a very necessary and important thing, that the financial resources of our country should be mustered freely and in ample measure in furtherance and support of the valiant efforts of our fighting men. If these efforts are appreciated and seconded as they should be, the Second Liberty Loan will be oversubscribed heavily, and small subscriptions, made possible by genuine saving and sacrifice, will contribute to that result in no unimportant degree.
