HONG KONG BASE

IN USE BV JAPANESE FOR OPERATIONS SOUTH OF EQUATOR. REASON FOR AMERICAN BOMBING. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, October 29. The significance of the United States air raids on Hong Kong this week is in the fact, disclosed by a Chinese official spokesman in London, that Hong Kong is used by the Japanese as the principal naval base for their operations south of the equator. The Chinese air attacks on Linsi are directed at reducing the productivity of the important Kaigung coalfields and the big power plant there. A communique issued by General Stilwell states that American bombers and fighters raided the aerodrome at Lashio, in Burma, on Tuesday, and hit the runway, a small hangar in the dispersal area, and an anti-aircraft battery. All the planes returned.
