Statement by Colonel Knox GREAT FIGHT AGAINST STRONG JAPANESE FORCES SOME ENEMY CLAIMS DISMISSED LONDON - ,, October 27. A big battle between United States and Japanese warships and planes is proceeding in the Solomons. Colonel Knox, Secretary of the Navy, describes the battle as one of manoeuvre. At a Press conference, Colonel Knox said the American forces were putting up a great fight against strong Japanese forces. The outcome was not. yet clear. Although stating that losses could be expected, Colonel Knox dismissed the Japanese claims of having sunk four aircraft carriers and a battleship as another fishing expedition. He said he was not forecasting any results and was certainly not forecasting defeat. The American forces on Guadalcanar are stubbornly resisting the Japanese attack. American troops and marines are defending the airfield. In the Aleutians two more bombing raids have been made on the Japanese air and submarine base at Kiska. A number of hits in the target area were observed.
