NEW PHASE OF WAR

EXPANSION OF ALLIED OFFENSIVE IN MANY THEATRES. STAGE OF THE DEFENSIVE ENDING. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, October 26. “The course of battle at present is uniformly favourable to the United Nations’ cause,” declares the “New York Times.” “The offensive in Egypt has successfully opened, with British-American air mastery. The British air raids on Italian cities are causing terrific damage, in addition to disrupting Rommel’s supply lines. “The Russians continue to resist at Stalingrad, where the German onslaughts apparently are weakening and the Russian resistance is strengthening. “Marines still possess the airfield at Guadalcanar, while the tempo of the American air attacks is increasing in the Solomons, in China, and in the Aleutians. “None of this means that the war is won. The prospects may be suddenly reversed in one theatre or another, but the phase of purely defensive warfare is ending and the phase of United Nations offensive is beginning.” WORLD SYMPATHY EARNED BY SOVIET UNION. CALL FOR SECOND FRONT. MOSCOW, October 26. M. Paspelov, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, in a broadcast to the Red Army, said: “The Soviet Union, through its struggle, has earned world-wide sympathy and love from all progressive, honest people. Friendly relations have been strengthened between the Soviet Union and England and America. The opening of a second front in Europe would further strengthen our fighting collaboration with the Allies.”
