Miss I. Stilburn, South Road, Masterton, spent the week-end in Napier. Mrs Wilson and Mrs Durie, 'Wellington, are spending a few days in Masterton. The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, left Welligton last night for ■ Auckland. Miss J. McLaren, Renall Street, Masterton, who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to Masterton. Official advice has been received by Mr and Mrs Leslie E. Gaskin, of Cambridge Terrace, Masterton, that their eldest son, Sapper Raymond E. Gaskin, has died of wounds while serving with the New Zealand forces overseas. Sapper Gaskin, who volunteered for service, left Masterton for camp early in January, 1941. He was 29 years of age. Mr John Collis Blomfield, who was for many years on the advertising staff of the “New Zealand Observer,” died at Auckland on Monday. He was a brother of the well-known cartoonist, Mr W. Blomfield. “Lofty” Blomfield, the professional wrestler, is a son. The death occurred yesterday of Miss Mary Lydia Clark, M.8.E., a member of a well-known old Wellington family. She was about to board a tramcar in Riddiford Street at about 10 o’clock on Saturday night when she was knocked down by a motor-car, suffering a broken leg, severe injuries to the ribs and a scalp wound. She was at once taken to the Wellington Hospital, where she later died. After a short illness, the death has occurred at a private hospital in Auckland of Mr Walter Naismith in his seventieth year. Mr Naismith arrived at Wellington from Scotland at the age of 14 years, and later succeeded his father in the control of one of the first steam laundries in Wellington. Mr Naismith went to Auckland to live in retirement 10 years ago. He was a foundation member of the Rotary Club in Wellington.
