RAIDS ON ITALY
NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN PARTICIPATE EXPERIENCE OVER MILAN. FACTORY SEEN COMING SKY HIGH. (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) (Special P.A. Correspondent.)' LONDON, October 26. Three New Zealanders took part in the daylight raid made by Lancaster bombers on Milan—Flying Officer R. O. Calvert, D.F.C., of the Waikato; Pilot Officer H. J. Barley, of Auckland, and Sergeant E. Waters, of Hamilton. Pilot Officer Barley dropped one of the 4.000 pounders which the crews call “cookies.” He said: “As we climbed to get out of the way of the blast, we saw a factory coming sky high towards us, so guess we hit it.” Pilot Officer Calvert said: “We made a run at 4,000 feet, bombed on the stipulated time and then went to 800 feet to allow the gunners to shoot up the Coule factories and also a goods train.”
New Zealanders also participated in the raid on Genoa, but the Air Ministry is not releasing their names at present.
