CARTERTON
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
FATHER’S NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) Despite the very wet night, there was a large attendance at the League of Mothers "Fathers’ Night,” which was held in the Masonic Hall' last night. The floral decorations of the hall were were particularly beautiful, bowls of Iceland poppies, arum lilies and tulips being effectively used. Mrs R. H. Every presided and welcomed those present and outlined the aims and objects of the league, which organisation continued to grow steadily in numbers. Songs, which were greatly appreciated by the audience, were rendered by Mrs Ardrey and Mr H. B. Keenan, Mrs F. G. Bath being the accompaniste. Mrs Peters contributed a humorous recitation.
Mr Brian O’Brien, in an address, spoke of his intense interest in children in connection with his broadcasting work, stressing that a great deal of wisdom could be learnt from the child. A study of the child proved that he was naturally ingenious, straight-forward and honest. Many of the qualities which we admired in children were lost in adults owing to the complexities of modern life, hedged in as we were with inhibitions. The speaker's vivid word pictures of personalities on the second Byrd Antarctic expedition in 1934-5 proved most interesting. Mr O'Brien referred to the tameness of the animals in the polar regions, seals being so tame that they allowed anyone to sit on their backs. Other interesting observations brought this enlightening address to a, close. Mr Geo. Brown thanked Mr O’Brien, on behalf of those present, for his interesting address, the audience showing their appreciation by acclamation.
Opportunity was taken by Mr Brown to thank members of the league for their splendid programme, complimenting them on the very efficient manner in which proceedings were conducted, and the high standard of the programme provided. Personal Items. Sergt. J. Stringer was this morning the recipient of a present from the citizens of Carterton. In making the presentation the Maly or, Mr D. L. Taverner, wished him the best of luck. Sergt. Stringer thanked the Mayor for his kindly words and for the gift. Mr W. Carpenter, Wellington district secretary of the Rechabite Order, who had been on a tour to Napier, and who visited Carterton, has returned to Wellington.
Residents of Clareville and district will entertain Corporal R. Hall at a social gathering in the local hall tonight. The _ opportunity will be taken to make 'a presentation to the guest of the evening. This gathering will be conducted in conjunction with the combined fortnightly Scout dance.
