HOME HEALTH GUIDE

THE SIMPLE THINGS COUNT.

SOME COMMON-SENSE RULES

(By the Health Department.)

I The building of healthy' bodies and healthy minds does not require any complicated formula or irritating procedure. In health, as in most things in life, it is the simple things that count, and by observing a few simple and common-sense rules, bodily and mental fitness are attainable. Sunlight, fresh air, pure water, good food and exercise are the things which, if used properly, build strong bodies and clear minds. Here are some points that parents might do well to check up on. They are the characteristics of a normal, healthy, happy child. A good clear skin; firm muscles; erect posture; light, elastic step; fearless, direct gaze; his height and weight are normal for his age; his digestion is good; he sleeps soundly and sufficiently; he is cheerful and ready to work or play; he is interested in varied things and people, instead of thinking always of himself; he is good-tempered and kindly, not nervous or irritable, and meets his difficulties calmly and cheerfully. Such a child has a healthy mind in a healthy body, and is a joy and comfort to all l around him.

In order to become strong and wholesome, the rules of physical and mental health must be’known and practised. Here they are: Use the fresh air and sunshine; get plenty of rest and sleep; take plenty of exercise and play in the outdoors; sit and stand'correctly; keep the body clean, both inside and outside; dress sanely, not vainly; eat the proper foods at regular mealtimes; take care of the eyes, ears, nose, throat and feet; and I think rightly and act rightly.
