MANY TARGETS
FROM CRETE TO TOBRUK ATTACKED BY ALLIED AIR FORCES. ENEMY SCHOONER SET ON FIRE. LONDON, October 20. Widespread operations, ranging from south of Crete to Tobruk, were carried out by Allied air forces in the Middle East yesterday. An enemy schooner was set on fire south-west of Crete and on the way back, the Allied planes ran into 32 German troop-carrying planes, some towing gliders. One of the transports was shot down and others were damaged. EXTENDED DAMAGE * —— TO SHIPS AND LAND OBJECTIVES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.27 a.m.) RUGBY, October 20. A Cairo communique states: “Apart from patrol activity there was nothing to report from our land forces yesterday. , . , x “Night fighters on Sunday night successfully attacked an enemy train at El Daba and landing grounds at Fuka. “Our heavy and medium bombers raided Tobruk and claim hits on enemy ships. On the same night our torpedocarrying aircraft scored a hit on the stern of an enemy merchantman near Pantellaria Island. The vessel was left sinking. “There was an increase m air operations over the battle area yesterday. Our bombers, fighter-bombers and fighters were all active and fires were started on enemy landing grounds. In subsequent air combats a number of enemy aircraft were damaged.”
