AFFORESTATION SCHEME

MASTERTON COUNTY PROJECT. VALIDATING LEGISLATION. Two clauses of the Washing-Up Bill, which came before the House of Representatives last night, related to an afforestation project being promoted by the Masterton County Council. Under the will of the late Dr. Trimble, late county solicitor, the income of the residue of his estate, estimated . at £20,000, is to be applied to afforestation in the Masterton County. In order temporarily to finance its afforestation project from the County Fund, the Council is authorised under the Bill to expend money for the purchase of 310 acres of land at Mt. Bruce for the planting of trees, the County Fund to be reimbursed from the income of the estate when it becomes available. The present trustees under the will are Messrs H. M. A. Major and S. V. Gooding, and according to the provisions of the will they are directed, after the death of the last of the annuitants, to transfer the corpus of the residuary estate to the New Zealand Insurance Co. in trust, to invest the same and to apply the income from such investments in perpetuity for the purpose of public afforestation in the county. A second clause empowers the New Zealand Insurance Company to approve the scheme and the expenditure involved.
