IN DEFENCE OF STALINGRAD
Limited Enemy Gains Made at Great Cost ANOTHER BLOCK OF BUILDINGS TAKEN LITTLE CHANGE DISCLOSED IN CAUCASUS LONDON, October 19. The Germans, at great cost, have captured another block of buildings in the Stalingrad industrial area and, making every effort for a final decision, are throwing in more and more men in an attempt to increase their recent gains. Mr Paul Winterton, the London “News-Chronicle’s” Moscow correspondent, states that in the last 24 hours the Germans have lost 60 or 70 more tanks. He emphasised that although the enemy drive has not yet been checked, the Red Army is now falling back more slowly than at any time during the last few days. . Another Moscow despatch gives a warning that the Soviet forces cannot afford to give up much more ground inside the city. Having failed to widen the gap in the northern tip of Stalingrad, Axis tanks and infantry are now thrusting at the city from the west. The enemy has lost heavily in armoured forces and men without making any appreciable gains. A German advance in the Novorossisk region is reported but all enemy attempts to push through to the Grozny oilfields have been frustrated.
