WELLINGTON MEETING. SOME MASTERTON PROSPECTS. As a dress rehearsal for Trentham next Saturday and Monday the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting at Otaki on Saturday did little to reveal form. The turning straight at Otaki and the wide, long straight at Masterton are two different propositions. On Saturday the top weights with possibly three exceptions just couldn't manage the narrow turning course and as a consequence punters fared badly. A Real Trier. Speaking to the president of the Masterton Racing Club, Mr J. M. James, shortly before the Solway Handicap was run off the writer was told that his Colossus gelding was a real trier although the track was too dry to suit the black. Poutatau could not overtake the speedy Palora. which won the race, but he hung on gamely for second despite a determined challenge by Augment. In view of the fact that Poutatau has run consistently well and is raced by a real sportsman, he should have strong support in his Trentham engagement, where he will probably tackle the Shorts Handicap. Poutatau is trained by J. H. Jefferd, at Hastings. Guineas Possibility. Dominate, a bay gelding, aged 3 years by Phaleron Bay—Martial Lady, and trained by T. R. George at Opaki, made a good showing at Otaki on Saturday to finish well up in the sprint with High Class and Wings of Song. The bay had been doing solid, pleasing track work at Opaki before going over for the Otaki Maori and the Masterton Racing Clubs’ fixtures. Dominate, which is entered in the Wellington Guineas, of one mile, has more than a possible chance. There should be some local • money for him, anyway. Gladynev Looking Well. Gladynev, Mr B. Burgess's Musketoon gelding, looked to be in good condition at Otaki on Saturday. He was, however, always well back to finish sixth. He should do better at Trentham where the course will probably suit him better. Showing Promise. Leisurely, a four years old chestnut mare, by Leighon—Leisure, trained at Awapuni for Mr J. A. Mansfield, is a promising mare. It will be recalled that Leisurely paid a price when she beat Registrar to leave the maiden class. Registrar, which is owned by McLachlan Bros., of Rangitumau, is by Nightly, and before he broke down showed great promise. Trainer AV. Morrison, of Otaki, thought very highly of the Nightly gelding. In view of Leisurely’s showing against Registrar, which was no flash in the pan, it will pay to keep her in mind for the future. Leisurely must have a turn on her showing at Otaki on Saturday, when she finished next to good ones like Rink and Daljarrock, which were beaten into placed positions by Theolateral, Starlet and Matalite. At a Bumper Price. Indian Sport (Bulandshar— Hiwipai), a 5 year old bay gelding, stole a march on strong opposition in the final race at Otaki on Saturday to return investors a'dividend of three score. The Whipper and Madame Rachel, which filled second and third places, failed to make any impression on Indian Sport which finished with a great burst of speed to take the race. --There will not be such a big dividend next time Indian Sport starts.
