ON JAPANESE WARSHIPS AND TRANSPORTS
In North-Western Solomons THREE CRUISERS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN HIT WITH HEAVY BOMBS MERCHANT VESSEL SET ON FIRE AND PLANES DESTROYED OR DAMAGED SYDNEY, October 19. Australian land-based Flying Fortresses have made four separate raids on a powerful concentration of Japanese warships and transports off Bougainville Island, in the north-west Solomons. Three Japanese cruisers are believed to have been hit with 10001 b bombs, and a merchantman was set on fire, and seven flying-boats were destroyed or damaged. A seaplane tender and cargo vessels were also attacked with unknown Tosnlts The United States Navy Department yesterday announced that on Guadalcanar Island the Japanese were massing troops and equipment /or a strong* assault on the airfield. . Flying Fortresses have bombed enemy troops on the island, and American fighters are operating. In all, since Saturday, the Japanese have lost 15 bombers and two fighters over the island, while the defenders have lost only one plane.
