SITUATION AS CRITICAL AS EVER
Some Important Ground Gained by Germans RUSSIANS WITHSTANDING DAY AND NIGHT ATTACKS CONTINUED SOVIET SUCCESS NORTH-WEST OF CITY
LONDON, October 18. Messages from Russia indicate that the situation at Stalingrad is as critical as at any time during its long and heroic defence. The Russians are beating off attacks night and day. Mr Paul Winterton, the London “News-Chronicle s correspondent says the Germans have not so far been able to break through on the northern outskirts of one of Stalingrad’s great factory districts. Most of the enemy tanks that got through were destroyed behind the Russian lines. Since the attack was renewed between 200 and 300 enemy tanks have been destroyed. The Russians are counter-attacking all the time. The present German offensive is aimed at widening the gap pointing to the bank of the Volga. North-west of Stalingrad the Russian attacks are still meeting with success and all enemy counter-attacks have failed. In the Caucasus the new German pressure in the Mozdok area is being maintained, but the Russians are still keeping the enemy away from the Grozny oilfields.
