CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING. AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute when Mrs D. N. Adams presided.

Owing to difficulty in obtaining sufficient quantities of wool there was a discussion as to- whether the Institute should continue presenting each soldier proceeding overseas with a parcel of woollen comforts. It was, however, unanimously decided to continue doing so. A demonstration of spinning was given by Mrs Munn. Members, were very interested and keen to learn this branch of war work. Mrs Munn was thanked and presented with a shoulder spray. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs G. Brazendale, who made her spinning wheel available. The competitions resulted as follows:—A cup which is competed for every year for the 6 best Iceland poppies was won by Miss S. Rayner. Mrs N. Peacock was second. Best bloom: Seniors: Mrs Williams, 1; Mrs McKinnon, 2; Mrs Rose, 3. Juniors: Miss McKinnon, 1; Miss G. Lukies, 2; Miss M. Lukies, 3. Worked apron: Juniors:. Miss J. Lukies, 1; Miss M. Lukies, 2. i Personal. Prior to leaving Carterton on Thursday, Signalman Graeme Tomlin, son of Mr and Mrs Tomlin, Lincoln Road, was met by the Mayor, Mr D L. Taverner, at the Council Chambers, and presented with a hold-all on behalf of the citizens of Carterton. Young Farmers’ Club Meeting. Mr J. Rose presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Young Farmers’ Club, when Mr W. Campin, Junr., gave a most interesting lecture oh “Breed, Feed and Weed,” the old slogan of the Herd Testing Association. He was listened to with interest and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A Popular Citizen Honoured. At the State Theatre last night Private Gordon Udy was the guest of honour of the citizens of Carterton. The gathering included members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Carterton Football Club. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, referred to the splendid personal qualities of Pte. Udy, who was, he said, a worthy citizen and businessman of Carterton, a good athlete and a footballer of reputation. In presenting him with a gift from the citizens, the Mayor wished him the best of luck. Speaking on behalf of the Fire Brigade, Superintendent J. H. Churchouse referred to Private Udy's excellent work as a member of the Fire Brigade, and Mr Keith Reid spoke on behalf of the Carterton Football Club and the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union. Superintendent Churchouse made a presentation to Private Udy on behalf of the Brigade and Football Club. Mr Udy suitably returned thanks. Dance at Belvedere. There was a fair attendance at the Belvedere schoolroom last evening when a patriotic dance was held. A most enjoyable time was spent to music supplied by Mrs Rogers, extras being played by Mr A. Morris and a soldier. Mr A. E. Reid was an efficient M.C. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. .
