Heavy Fighting in Guadalcanal* FOLLOWING ON LANDING OF JAPANESE REINFORCEMENTS DEVELOPMENTS IN OTHER PACIFIC AREAS LONDON, October IG. With the Solomons battle in its fourth day and land, sea and air forces heavily engaged, a large number of Japanese troops have been landed on Guadalcanar Island and heavy land fighting is now in progress. The American positions are being heavily shelled. This information is given in a United States Navy Department communique. On Tuesday morning American aircraft damaged nine Japanese aircraft on the ground in the Solomons area. During the following night United States light craft probably scored a torpedo hit on an enemy cruiser. A United States 'Navy Department spokesman said that stern fighting was continuing, but no complete view would be obtained till the action was finished. So far as the land fighting was concerned, all the information available was being released as quickly as possible.
