WAR COUNCIL VIEW
POSITION IN NEW GUINEA SATISFACTORY FEDERAL PREMIER PRAISES ARMY. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE TO ENEMY. (By Telegranh—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. After a careful analysis of the reports of high Service officers and Ministers, the War Council yesterday expressed satisfaction with the situation in New Guinea. Following upon recent, criticism of the Army in New Guinea, the War Council’s view, expressed with a complete knowledge of the facts of
the position, is regarded as specially important. After the meeting the Federal Premier, Mr Curtin, stated that the Council was satisfied with the state of affairs in New Guinea. It accepted the situation as being the results of splendid deeds in the recent fighting in New Guinea, which showed that considerable quantities of equipment had been captured and substantial casualties inflicted on the enemy. The Japanese had been compelled to abandon fixed positions which had been strongly prepared to resist attack.
