VEGETABLE GROWING
BIG AREA AT GREYTOWN BEING DEVELOPED.
SCHEME WELL UNDER WAY.
Development of the large vegetable production area, which is being established at Greytcwn under the direction of the Department of Agriculture, is now well under way and sowing is proceeding rapidly. The area is nearly 100 acres in extent and is one of the largest of several similar projects located throughout the Dominion. The local scheme is in the charge of Mr N. Lamont, of the Department, of Agriculture, Masterton, and the area selected is located on first class country, flat, but well drained.
Since operations commenced about nine weeks ago a very considerable amount of preparatory work has been accomplished and a satisfactory range of equipment assembled. Buildings are not yet completed. The nucleus of the staff has been assembled to enable a start to be macle with sowing without further delay. It is proposed to concentrate on the production of all manner of vegetables of the more perishable type and so far as the season will permit, it is hoped that a fairly steady monthly production of the various kinds will be maintained.
Naturally the equipping and the staffing of such a project is a difficult matter under present conditions and labour requirements both for casual and regular hands and for piece workers will grow rapidly over the next few weeks.
An advertisement in another part of this issue advises men seeking employment on this area to get in touch with the overseer at Greytown or with the Masterton office of the Department of Agriculture.
