NEW RECORDS

SET BY THE DEFENDERS OF MALTA IN DESTRUCTION OF AXIS PLANES. RELATIVELY SMALL BRITISH LOSS. LONDON, October 13. New air defence records were put up yesterday by the defenders of Malta. All day enemy bombers and fighters came over in waves. Spitfires shot down* 25 figliters • for certain and damaged more than 50 others. It is doubtful if any of those damaged reached home. Six British planes were lost but two of the pilots are safe. Altogether, the R.A.F. has shot down 40 enemy planes in the last two days, since the Axis intensified its attacks on the island.

During the afternoon a force of 45 Messerschmitts turned tail on being attacked by half that number of Spitfires.
