ON ENEMY MERCHANT SHIPS SCORED BY AMERICAN PLANES IN MEDITERRANEAN. AXIS DESTROYER BOMBED IN ANOTHER AREA. LONDON, October 12. Heavy bombers of the American Air Force scored direct hits on two'merchant ships, escorted by destroyers, south of Crete. One merchant ship was set on fire and was left sinking. Two enemy planes were shot down. All the American planes returned to their base.

In another part of the Mediterranean an enemy destroyer was hit by a heavy calibre armour-piercing bomb. A big flash and large column of smoke rose from the ship.
