LAVAL’S DIRTY WORK
IN RECRUITING LABOUR FOR GERMANY ■ I THREAT OF PRESS GANG METHODS. DEMAND FOR 133,000 FRENCHMEN AS SLAVES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, October 9. A Vichy communique states that Laval today detailed to Cabinet conversations he has had in Paris with the occupying authorities regarding the speeding up of the recruitment of labour for Germany. He emphasised their importance and gravity. A British United Press correspondent at Vichy says Laval told the Cabinet that 133,000 Frenchmen must go to Germany for factories before the end of October or there would be grave consequences, for France. About 1,500 labour volunteers are at present leaving daily for Germany. It is presumed that the “consequences” would be the forcible mobilisation of whatever workers Germany wants.
