HELD ON ALL PARTS OF EASTERN FRONT
During Past Twenty-four Hours NO VITAL CHANGE AT STALINGRAD INCREASED ENEMY EFFORTS REPELLED IN CAUCASUS LONDON, October 9. The battle for . Stalingrad continues without any vital change. From Leningrad to the Black Sea the Russians have held their positions all along the line for the past 24 hours. The battle for Stalingrad takes first place in the news from Russia. The enemy is still launching heavy attacks, in spite of Berlin’s assurance that no more infantry attacks are considered necessary. Only one of the latest attacks succeeded in breaking into a street, but the occupation was brief. The Red Army wiped out the bulk of the enemy forces and drove the remnants back to their starting point. North-west of the city Soviet troops broke into the enemy trenches after bitter hand-to-hand fighting. For the first time for some days, the southern Stalingrad front is mentioned. An enemy pincer movement was completely smashed by a Soviet Guard unit. Outside the city the Red Army has regained an important hill. In the Caucasus the German drive towards Grozny is gaining momentum, but has achieved nothing new against the Russian resistance. The Russians have improved their positions guarding the Black Sea coast. Near Moscow and Leningrad, German infantry attacks have been beaten off. The enemy’s, troops were halted before they got near the Russian forces.
