JAPANESE COLUMN FROM KINHWA CHINESE INFLICT HEAVY CASUALTIES. UPRISING IN CANTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CHUNGKING, September 28. Chinese forces have inflicted considerable casualties on Japanese columns striking west and south-west of Kinhwa. One enemy column lost 300 in a four-hour battle, and the remainder fled. Subsequently the Chinese engaged a second column near Wuyi, south-east of Kinhwa, where fighting is progressing. A Chinese communique reports that Lieutenant-General Nuogi Sakai, the leading Japanese commander, was killed in action at Lanchi, in Chekiang Province.
The “New China Daily” reported that Formosan and Korean troops in Canton inflicted 1000 casualties on the Japanese in an uprising, after’ which 88 Koreans and four Formosans were executed.
FLOOD DISASTER IN SHANSI LATE IN AUGUST. HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE & DAMAGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, September 28. The Chungking correspondent of the Associated Press of America says belated dispatches report that a mighty wave six to 20 feet deep from the Yellow River flooded eastern Shansi Province late in August, leaving 3000 persons dead and 40,000 homeless. The subsiding waters deposited layers of mud two to three feet deep. The loss of crops threatens a famine.
