CARGO PILLAGING
“BIGGEST CRIMINAL RACKET IN SYDNEY” ■
advocacy of heavier penalties. AND INCREASED POWERS FOR POLICE. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, September 29. Cargo pillaging at wharves in Australian ports has become so serious that efforts are being made by shipping companies and importers to have more severe penalties imposed on offenders. It is also desired that the police be given increased facilities to search persons suspected of pillaging. The shipping companies in Sydney say they expect losses totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds this year through cargo pillaging on the waterfront. Pillaging is believed to be now the biggest criminal racket in Sydney.
Statistics kept by the shipping companies show that’the average cost a ton of cargo for pillage claims has risen from 2.26 d in 1938 to slightly more than Is. Goods which come under the rationing system are those most keenly sought by pillagers.
