AUSTRALIANS DEFEAT NEW ZEALANDERS. CONTEST IN GREAT BRITAIN FOR AXEMEN’S CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) LONDON, September 27. The Australian Forestry Units defeated the New Zealanders by 26 points to 10 for the Ministry of Supply Axemen's Cup in a carnival at Dumfries. The New Zealanders, who are stationed in South England, won the cup last year. They journeyed north this year to defend it, with Mr V/. J. Jordan (N.Z. High Commissioner), and the commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Elliott.

At their head was Sapper R. Grundy, of Auckland, who took the twelve-inch standing block championship in 28 1-5 seconds. Sapper S. Barratt, of Cambridge, was third in this event. Sapper J. T. Jackson, of West Coast, New Zealand, was second in the fourteeninch underhand championship. Sapper Grundy finished third in the ten-inch combination championship. Sappers D. H. O’Brien, of Tuatapere, and G. Lodge, of Karamea, won the fourteen-inch crosscut sawing contest. Mr Jordan, after the carnival, went on to inspect New Zealand torpedobombing Beaufighter squadrons.
