IN RUSSIA'S FAVOUR
THE LATEST STALINGRAD FIGHTING Attack from North Penetrates Main German Lines VITAL IMPORTANCE OF BATTLE STRESSED BY RIBBENTROP CONFIDENT DECLARATION BY SOVIET SPOKESMAN LONDON, September 27, The battle for Stalingrad during the past 24 hours has gone in favour of the Russians, who are striking powerful counterblows. _ , . Mr Paul Winterton, the London News-Chronicle representative, speaks again of the enormous German losses. He describes how Soviet troops are blasting their way into Naziheld houses and factories in north-west Stalingrad. The Russians developed a technique of dynamiting their way into fortified buildings, blowing up everyone inside. _ The Germans themselves speak of the determined resistance of the Russians and admit that a Russian attack from the north of Stalingrad has succeeded in penetrating the mam German defence lines. Herr von Ribbentrop indulged in some wishful thinkingabout Stalingrad in a speech to workers and others. He said that with the taking of this city Germany’s most dangerous antagonist would suffer a blow from which she could not recover. His speech appeared to have given a plain impression that Stalingrad was already in Nazi hands. The German Propaganda Minister, Goebbels, has been consistently playing down the importance of Stalingrad. The Soviet Propaganda Chief stated that Stalingrad was undermining the offensive spirit of the German Army and destroying its men, while the Russians were gaining new military experience. The Germans had lost most valuable time in the summer and early autumn. The spokesman referred also to the ever-stronger bond between Russia, Britain and the United States. He told how Nazi plans in Russia .had been upset. Throwing 100 infantry divisions into South Russia, with several thousands of tanks and planes, the German High Command had. expected within two or three weeks to seize the whole of the Caucasus and Stalingrad and to free German forces for a new offensive against Moscow and later against Britain. The fighting had now lasted ' for oyer 100 days and German official comment was getting more and more cautious.
