GOING TO NEW GUINEA
AUSTRALIAN ARMY MINISTER IN ORDER TO GET FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE. NO CHANGE REPORTED IN SITUATION. LONDON. September 25. The Australian Army Minister, Mr F. M. Forde, is likely to visit New Guinea to get first-hand knowledge of the position there. No change is reported in the situation. BIG ENEMY SHIP HIT AND PROBABLY SUNK AT RABAUL. FLYING FORTRESSES IN ACTION. SYDNEY, September 25. In an attack on Rabaul Harbour early yesterday morning, Flying Fortresses scored a direct hit amidships on an 8000-ton enemy cargo vessel, which was left burning and probably sank. Raids were also made on Dili in Timor, Buka in the Solomons, Mubo, an advanced base for Salamaua, and at points on the Port Moresby trail over the Owen Stanley Ranges. It was reported that there had been considerable recent Japanese shipping activity in Rabaul Harbour, and our bombers encountered heavy A.A. fire from warships and shore batteries. Several ships arc staled to have been in the harbour when the attack was made.
