STUBBORN RUSSIAN DEFENCE OF STALINGRAD Germans Counter-Attacking North-west of City NO NEW ENEMY PROGRESS IN CAUCASUS NAZIS FAIL TO RECOVER POSITIONS IN LENINGRAD REGION LONDON, September 25. In the battle for Stalingrad the Germans are making strong efforts to get possession of one of the main streets running right across the city from the west to the river. The Soviet forces are maintaining their stand against the German panzers. North-west of the city, Marshal Timoshenko is keeping up his strong attacks. Messages indicate that the Germans realise the importance of this Kussian relief operation and are counterattacking in strength. The German radio, ’in a broadcast to countries outside Germany, now says that it is not of any importance that Stalingrad should be taken quickly and that the fighting in the Caucasus is now much more significant. The German radio has not yet attempted to put this story across to home listeners. In the Leningrad area, the Russians have repelled German attempts to regain, certain positions. In the Caucasus the Germans are still held around Mozdok, and on the Black Sea coast they are no nearer their objective of Tuapse.
