WAIKATO MINING STRIKE SIX PITS STILL IDLE. REPORTED DEMANDS. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) HAFILTON, September 24. . The confused situation in the Waikato coalfields was aggravated further today by a decision of the men at the Rotowaro and Alison collieries, who returned to work yesterday, to fall into line again with the men at the other mines affected. With the exception ol the Mangapehi mine, where the men decided yesterday to resume work this morning, and the Wilton colliery, all the mines in the affected area are again idle today.
The idle mines now comprise Pukemiro, Glen Alton, McDonald, Renown, Rotowaro, and Alison. The men of the Rotowaro and Alison mines who reside in Huntly boarded an early train today with the intention of going out to their pitheads, but after a short interval they left the train and remained in Huntly.
Generally it is understood that the men are demanding a clarifying of the original issues, and until the minimum wage dispute at Pukemiro has been settled they will not consider resumption of work. SECRET BALLOT INFORMATION RECEIVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. September 24. “I have received information that an agreement has been reached to hold a secret ballot tomorrow by all the men in the 'Waikato mines to ascertain whether they will work the coal fields uncled State-controlled conditions. This statemerit was made by the Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, today. Replying to a question, Mr Webb said he believed that the men would vote solidly for ’.he resumption of work provided lhe mines were Statecontrolled. The Northern District Union would conduct the ballot. He added that the State coal mines produced one-ninth of the total coal output of New Zealand. Ito did not think that because of the Government's decision regarding the 'Waikato mines other privately-owned mines would desire to bo controlled by the State. The Government’s decision was not due to any demand by the miners. It was due to the war effort.
