FURIOUS GERMAN ASSAULTS ON STALINGRAD

Twelve Successive Tank Attacks Repelled STEADY SOVIET PROGRESS IN NORTH-WEST SUBURBS NO NEW ENEMY HEADWAY IN CAUCASUS LONDON, September 24. A tremendous new effort by the Germans to smash a way through to the centre of Stalingrad has been shattered by the Russians. The Germans, supported by 200 tanks and with thousands of lorry-borne infantry, made twelve successive attempts to break through. The German artillery kept .up a non-stop barrage and the Luftwaffe roared overhead hour after hour. Soviet Guards units fought with anti-tank rifles and guns, hand-grenades, and petrol bottles. A dozen German attacks were repelled, and 42 of the tanks were put out of action in the streets. The defends ers are holding their ground. Marshal Timoshenko, in an effort to relieve the pressure on Stalingrad, is making steady progress in the north-west suburbs. Soviet gunboats on the Volga are playing an important part, 'throwing Russian reinforcements across the river and evacuating wounded on their return journey. In the Caucasus the enemy has been reinforced near Mozdok, but all his efforts to advance have been checked. On the Black Sea coast the German drive to reach the port of Tuapse has met with no more success. The Russians have regained some ground. At Voronezh three German counter-attacks were repelled.
