The engagement is announced of Gwen, daughter of Mrs M. Blackley. Masterton. to Wallace, brother of Mr G. A. Brown, Palmerston North. Acting Air Commodore M. W. Buckley, M.8.E., R.N.Z.A.F., has been appointed till March 26, 1943, an honorary aide-de-camp on the staff of the Governor-General, vice Wing Commander J. Seabrook, A.F.C., R.N.Z.A.F. Recognised beyond New Zealand as an authority on plant breeding and for the past 14 years director of the Wheat Research Institute, Dr Frederick William Hilgendorf died suddenly in Wellington on Wednesday night. He was 68 years of age. Dr Hildendorf was born in Otago and educated at the Otago University, and Auckland University College. After holding positions on the staff of Prince Albert College, Auckland, he was appointed lecturer in natural science. Canterbury Agricultural College, in 1899. After three years’ service he left to take a position at the Southland Boys’ High School, remaining there three years before being reappointed to Canterbury Agricultural College. Fie resigned from his position as professor of agricultural botany at Canterbury Agricultural College in 1936. In the early years of the Wheat Research Institute’s existence, Cross 7 wheat, the breeding of which he had initiated at. Lincoln, was distributed and became the leading variety in the Dominion.
