MADE BY THE GERMANS AT STALINGRAD

In Another 24 Honrs of Murderous Fighting ENEMY AT SOME POINTS PUSHED BACK SLOW BUT STEADY RUSSIAN GAINS IN LENINGRAD AREA LONDON, September 22. The Red Army at Stalingrad has stood firm for another 24 hours and in some sectors it has pushed the enemy back. A new German onslaught is now awaited. Street fighting in the city is described as more murderous than anything hitherto seen in this war. Fresh Gorman reserves are being reorganised behind the enemy’s lines. The suburbs in the north-western part of the city, where the Germans made their deepest penetration, are still the scene of the heaviest fighting. Berlin speaks of the difficult weather conditions and the bitter resistance of the Russians. Moscow despatches say the Russians are using bayonets, rifle butts and incendiary bottles to drive the enemy from house after house. In other sectors the Russians are fortifying themselves in industrial buildings and are preparing to hold out to the last man. The ‘ ‘ Red Star ’ ’ has a new slogan for Stalingrad: ‘' Every house a fortress.” At the southern end of the battlefront the Germans are using newly arrived reinforcements to resume their drive to the Grozny oilfield. On the main sectors the Russians have the position in hand but in one area it is reported they have withdrawn from a hill. On ths Leningrad front the Soviet forces continue slow but steady progress to relieve the city from the south-east. The Germans have been counter-attacking, but without success.
