NEAR APPROACH

TO MADAGASCAR CAPITAL MADE BY BRITISH FORCES. NEWS GIVEN BY VICHY. LONDON, September 22. In Madagascar Allied troops are closing in on the capital from two directions. , A Vichy French communique, broadcast from the capital, states that the column advancing from Majunga is only 19 miles away. A British report states that much of the damage to road and other works in Madagascar which is being carried out in order to delay the British advance will be irreparable for the time being and will seriously affect the communications and trade of the island. It is emphasised in London that the unfortunate inhabitants of Madagascar clearly have been the dupes of a few civil and military officials, who advocated the destruction at the dictation of Vichy.
