ALLIED ATTACK
ON THE JALO OASIS SOUTH-EAST OF BENGHAZI. REPORTED BY ITALIANS. LONDON, September 22. In the Western Desert the Italians report a daylight attack by Allied motorised forces on the JaloOasis, which is 500 miles behind the Egyptian battlefront and 230 miles south-east of Benghazi. There is no information in London of any such operation but an Italian communique refers to it as a daring attack by numerically superior forces. It started on September 16’. The battle went on until yesterday when an Axis motorised column came to the rescue and the Allied force retired to the south. PATROL ACTIVITY CONTINUED IN EGYPT. (British Official Wireless.) Middle East headquarters in Cairo announces: “During Sunday night our patrol activity continued. “Yesterday land operations were confined to artillery exchanges. ,‘Air activity over the battle area was on a reduced scale yesterday. A Messerschmitt 109 was shot down in a minor engagement.” REPORTED MISSING GROUP CAPTAIN KELLETT. (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 22. Group Captain Kellett, who led the R.A.F’s. record long-distance flight from Ismalia to Darwin in 1938, is reported missing on operations in the Middle East.
