AMERICAN STREET NAMES
BANNED IN FRANCE BY ORDER I OF NAZIS.
The Avenue du President Wilson, in Paris, is to be renamed, by order of the Germans. This order will doubtless lead to the changing of the names of the thousands of avenues, streets and squares throughout France bearing the name of the former president of the United States. In the wave of enthusiasm that greeted the arrival in France of President Wilson for the peace conference following the last war, every town and village insisted on giving his name to one of its squares or thoroughfares. It was impossible to go anywhere without finding a Rue, an Avenue, or a Square President Wilson. When the failure of the United States to ratify the peace treaty brought disappointment to France there were many proposals for renaming the streets avenues and squares. In Paris one morning, it was found that someone had chalked out “Avenue du President Wilson” and put in its place, “Avenue des Americains”. The Avenue du President Wilson was close to the Avenue George V.,
