STILL HOLDING FIRM
DEFENDERS OF STALINGRAD ENEMY PUSHED BACK IN ONE SECTOR. POSITION ON OTHER FRONTS. LONDON, September 21. A Moscow communique states that the defenders of Stalingrad are still holding firm. In one sector they have pushed the enemy back. In another sector near the outskirts of the city the Russians have repulsed German attacks
with heavy losses to the enemy.
Strong Russian counter-attacks are reported at Stalingrad. The Germans refer to them as relief attacks. In the north-western suburbs, street after street has been retaken by the Soviet forces.
On the Leningrad front the Russians continue to improve communications with the city. The Germans have been dislodged from another fortified position.
In the Eastern Caucasus the Russians still have 'the initiative in most sectors, but there are indications that the Germans are now getting reinforcements.
