An official German statement claims that German bombers and U-boats, m an attack beginning on September 13, sank 38 merchantmen from a British Arctic convoy going to Russia, lhe Luftwaffe, it is claimed, also sank one destroyer and two escort vessels. The German High Command said lhe convoy was the largest ever to attempt to force a passage to Russia. The convoy was sailing close to the, pack ice south of Spitzbergen and escorts formed several cordons around the merchantmen. The battle raged uninterruptedly for six days. The ships sunk included six tankers and one large munition ship, which blew up. It is learned in London that the German claims are greatly exaggerated.
