On Southern Side of Owen Stanley Range

KO CHANGE ON GUADALCANAR ISLAND

AMERICAN MARINES HOLDING POSITIONS

LONDON, September 17

In New Guinea bitter fighting is proceeding in the Owen Stanley Mountains. The Japanese are now less than 40 miles from Port Moresby. The new advance has been made on the southern slopes of the mountains.

No change in the situation is reported on Guadalcanar Island. It was announced last night that fighting had ceased and that the American marines held the positions they captured last month. The only new activity reported is continued yrobiing by marine patrols.
