Mr A. W. Greig, Auckland, has been re-elected president of the New Zealand Timber Merchants’ Association. Mr H. S. Beaumont, new business supervisor for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, visited Masterton yesterday. The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister, returned to Wellington yesterday from his visit to the United States of America.

Mr G. B. Menzies, honorary secretary of the Napier R.S-A- and Wellington East Coast district vice-president of the New Zealand R.S.A., who has been visiting Masterton, returned to Napier today. Mr E. G. Norman, representative of the British Ministry of Food in the Argentine, is visiting Masterton on leave. Mr Norman arrived in Masterton this morning. He recently visited England and made the journey to New Zealand by air. Sir Charles Norwood, who has undergone a serious illness, is now recuperating at Masterton. At yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Free Ambulance Board it was decided to send Sir Charles a message of regret at his illness, expressing the hope that he would soon be restored to health.

The Hon, D. G. Sullivan* Minister of Supply and Munitions, returned to Wellington yesterday from Auckland.

There are two candidates for the Timaru mayoral election on October 1. They are Mr P. B. Foote, the actingmayor, and Mr A. E. S. Hanan, a member of the borough council. The election is necessary as a result of the decision of the council not to extend the six months’ leave granted to the Mayor, Major W. G. Tweedy, who is in the Middle East. The funeral of the late Mrs P. L. McLaren took place yesterday afternoon, there being a representative attendance of mourners from many parts of the district. The Rev. W. J. Couling conducted the service at the residence, Renall Street, Masterton, and also that at the Greytown Cemetery. There was a great profusion of beautiful wreaths, among them being one from the Gladstone Women’s Institute and one from Messrs Sellar and Sellar. The pallbearers were Messrs J. Strang, D. Morrison, W. ,S. Cameron, W. F. McLaren, H. M. McLaren and P. Cooper.
