LABOUR CONTROL
PROBLEMS IN UNITED STATES ADOPTION OF BRITISH METHODS. PREDICTED BY MR McNUTT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.25 a.m.) RUGBY. September 16. British methods are being studied in order to arrive at a solution of Uniteci States labour problems, Mr Paul McNutt told a committee of the House of Representatives, according to a Washington message.. He added that he believes the adoption of legislation giving him power over labour supply similar to that enjoyed by Mr Ernest BeviiT, British Minister of Labour, is inevitable if labour problems are to be solved. „ „ Mr McNutt, said that some form of legislation fully utilising the nation’s manpower was inevitable. There was good reason to doubt whether volunary agreements between the Government, labour and management would long be adequate. “We are moving rapidly into a situation where the Government must intervene in the labour market,” he continued. “It is unlikely that the United States will be able to avoid the labour controls her Allies have found necessary.” Mr McNutt had previously announced that serious labour shortages existed in thirty-five production centres.
