JAPANESE REINFORCEMENTS LANDED ON GUADALCANAR

United States Marines Holding Positions' HEAVY FIGHTING IN PROGRESS SINCE SUNDAY AMERICAN NAVAL LOSSES AT MIDWAY ISLAND LONDON, September 16. In the Solomon Islands, American marines are engaged heavily with Japanese reinforcements landed on Guadalcanar. The Japanese are trying to recapture the air.base on the island. Heavy fighting has been in progress since Sunday. The latest reports are that the marines are holding their positions. In the New Guinea area Allied bombers attacked the Japanese base at Buna and shipping at Eabaul. No further progress towards Port Moresby has been made by the Japanese troops in the Owen Stanley mountains. The Navy Department, Washington, announces that in the Midway Island battle the aircraft-carried Yorktown and the destroyer Hammond were sunk. These were the only American losses in the battle.
