CAPTURE OF CITY
UNLIKELY AT PRESENT RATE OF NAZI ADVANCE ONLY FEW HUNDRED YARDS A DAY. BUT DANGER FROM EXHAUSTION OF DEFENDERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 16. The Russians have had to yield more ground west of Stalingrad, after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Today’s Moscow communique refers to repeated fierce attacks west of Stalingrad by large enemy forces of infantry, planes and tanks which gained some ground. South-west of the city, the Germans lost heavily for no further advance. At the present rate of advance—only a few hundred yards a' day—the Germans could not hope to reach the centre of the city before winter. Reports from Moscow, however, sav that th£ chief danger to Stalingrad may come from the sheer exhaustion of the defenders.
The Germans have launched attack after attack and are bombing the Russian positions ceaselessly. The Russian supplies across the Volga are also being attacked. In the eastern Caucasus, Soviet forces are still stubbornly resisting the German crossing of the Terek River.
